Geez! I knew it was awhile ago that the album came out but I didn’t realize it’s been 15 years!!! I’m going to go ahead and put it on record that 1999 was THE best year in Pop music. The year 1999 included these great albums:
Destiny’s Child – “The Writings On The Wall”
Britney Spears – “…Baby One More Time”
Shania Twain – “Come On Over”
TLC – “Fanmail”
Ricky Martin – “Ricky Martin”
Santana – “Supernatural”
and so many more amazing artists who are still round or who have influenced the artists of today. But back to Ms. Xtina… if you remember back during this time, there was a battle of the blonde princesses which included Christina, Britney, Mandy Moore, and Jessica Simpson. For some reason, big label companies and the media felt the need to constantly compare these ladies to one another – who’s the best singer, who’s the prettiest, best dancer, blah blah blah. In all actuality, there really was just one that stood out among the other. Now, before you go and get your pitchforks and torches and bang down my door, let’s just make one thing clear – ALL OF THE GIRLS HAVE MADE IT BIG! Britney is the Queen of Pop Music, Jessica is a reality star and is making a killing off of her marketing campaigns, and Mandy is racking up her acting and voiceover work – they are all doing just fine. But Christina is a nonstop, in your face, machine! From her gig on The Voice, to her voice and music, to her ever changing image, she is constantly doing interesting things and for the most part, excelling at them all. (We’ll overlook “Lotus”)
As you’ll remember, “Genie In A Bottle” was HUGE – EPIC even!! It basically took over radio and in doing so spent 5 weeks in the #1 spot on Billboards Top 100 chart (which was the longest stay at #1 by any artist that year). Take a trip down memory lane and watch the video for “Genie In A Bottle” below.
Her debut album had other hits as well, proving she wasn’t going to be a One Hit Wonder. Her follow up single “What A Girl Wants” also topped the Billboard Top 100 chart and showcased Christina’s vocal range (who would have thunked it?!). It also gave us a glimpse into the future X-tina.
“Come On Over Baby” was my favorite song, after “Genie In A Bottle” and once again topped the charts. The song just oozes that “late 90s/early 00s” sound and those outfits… wow.
15 years ago, if someone would have told me that Christina Aguilera would be the star that she is today, I would have agreed… ABSO-freakin-LUTELY, 100%! I’m happy the other three are doing well but to be honest, they do not hold a candle to the all around star power of Ms. Aguilera.
So here’s to you Christina… may you continue to create great music and we look forward to seeing what you have in store for us next 15 years.
